How to test a power supply
1. The first step is to remove the cover, making sure to completely destroy the "Warranty Void if Removed" sticker.
2. Stand as far away as possible from the unit, then plug it in. If it did not explode turn it on. No explosion yet? Good.
3. You cannot properly test a power supply without an adequate supply of paperclips. Turn off the PSU and use a paperclip to short out the green wire (there is only one) to any black wire.
4. Turn the PSU back on. You know you were looking real close when you did it that time, so if you still have eyebrows then it must be ok.
5. Find everything in the house that you can dig up, that you can possibly connect to the PSU, that you are not afraid to lose in the midst of the ensuing fireball. Fans (with or without any type of electical connection), and old hard drives work great.
6. Use paperclips and staples (yes staples do conduct electricity) as necessary to connect all of the fans to the power supply. Connect one fan to both the 12V and 5V rails to put some load on the 5V rail, connect all of the other fans from 12V to ground.
7. Snap a picture of the mess that you just made and post in on the internet. If your dining room table is not on fire when you get done the PSU works just fine.
